XL Photography was founded by Xiaomei Liu, a photographer and naturalist whose lifelong fascination with birds shaped both her lens and her path. What began as a personal pursuit of beauty, flight, and stillness has grown into a focused creative studio built on patience, light, and storytelling through nature.
For us, photography is both an artistic practice and a way of paying attention — a quiet, intentional act rooted in deep respect for the lives we observe. Every image begins with a pause, a breath, and a willingness to let the wild speak first.
We believe great photography begins with humility. Birds owe us nothing — and when they allow us to witness a moment of flight, stillness, or connection, it is a gift.
To us, photography is not just about making images; it’s about listening with the eyes — walking slowly, waiting patiently, and noticing the quiet details that often go unseen.
At XL Photography, every image is created with care and intention. We believe in working ethically, treading lightly, and telling stories that honor the wild rather than impose upon it.
Our hope is that the work we create inspires deeper curiosity, reverence, and joy for the natural world — and a greater sense of connection with the life that surrounds us.
At XL Photography, we create bird-focused fine art imagery and lead guided photography tours through some of the most ecologically rich habitats in North America — from Florida’s wetlands and coastlines to Mexico’s remote preserves and salt lagoons.
Our work centers on species such as flamingos, owls, cranes, ospreys, and a diverse range of waterbirds and shorebirds. We specialize in early light, clean composition, and capturing birds in expressive motion or quiet, intimate behavior — moments where wildness and grace converge.
In addition to our portfolio work, we offer small-group and private field experiences designed to help others grow as photographers while deepening their connection with nature.
XL Photography remains intentionally small — personal, focused, and rooted in direct experience. As we continue to explore new places and observe new species, we’re committed to sharing more of this journey through images, stories, and time in the field.
Whether through a printed piece, a curated portfolio, or a morning walk with cameras and fellow bird lovers, our work is meant to create pause — an invitation into a slower, more attentive way of seeing the living world.
Thank you for visiting XL Photography. We hope to meet you out in the field someday — quiet, patient, and watching for the wings.
